Microsoft Word and JAWS

 

Jaw's help mode

 

JAWS key is the insert key on the numeric keypad.

JAWS key + one on the numbers row will toggle help mode on and off.

 

JAWS keypad controls

 

Eight moves up a line and reads the line.

Seven moves the cursor to the beginning of the line.

Six moves right a character and speaks that character.

Five speaks the current character, press the five twice to get the  phonetic spoken of the letter.

Four moves left one character and speaks that character.

Two moves down a line and reads the line.

One moves the cursor to the end of the line.

 

JAWS + eight will read the current line.

jaw's + four will move left one word and speak the word.

JAWS+ five will speak the current word, if you do it twice it will spell the word.

JAWS + six will move right one word and speak the word.

 

Deleting characters:

 

Move the cursor to the character you want to delete, press the delete key.

Inserting characters:

 

Move the cursor to the letter or group of letters you want to shove to the right and type the text.

 

Rules for inserting words

 

Rule 1, if you are inserting a word in a sentence:

·        move to the word you want to shove to the right,

·        Type in the word you want to insert followed by a space.

 

Rule 2, if you are inserting at a punctuation mark with a space before it:

·        move to the punctuation mark,

·        type the word you want to insert but don't type a space.

·        If there is no space before the punctuation mark, move to the punctuation mark, type space, and type the word

 

Rule 3, if you want to insert a word at the end of a line,

·        move to the end of the line,

·        type a space and then type the word.  If there is no punctuation mark, you can type it at this time.

 

Control key's

 

Control key- home will move the cursor to the top of the document.

Control key- end will move the cursor to the bottom of the document.

Control key- Z will undo your last action.

Control-delete will delete the word and the space after the word.

 

Opening an existing document

 

Step one- press Alt key.

Step two- press down arrow to open  menu choice and press enter.

Step three- press Shift tab to go to the list of documents.

Step four- arrow down to the document you want and press enter.

 

Saving an existing document

 

Step one- Press the alt key.

Step two- arrow down to the save menu choice.

Step three- press the enter key.

 

Closing an existing document

 

Step one- press the alt key.

Step two- Arrow down to the close menu choice.

Step three- press enter.

 

Using the spell check

 

Step one- press the alt key.

Step two- press the right arrow till you hear tools.

Step three- press the down arrow.

Step four- press enter at the spelling and grammar menu choice.

 

JAWS + F7 respeaks the spell check information.

JAWS + eight reads the word in context.

 

First pathway-

If the word is a proper noun or correct word, tab to ignore or add buttons and press spacebar.

 

Second pathway-

Misspelled word and I don't like the suggested word, tab to the suggestion box , arrow down to the suggestion that is correct, then tab to change button and press space bar.

 

Third pathway-

Misspelled word and I like the suggestion, tab to the change button and press the spacebar.

 

Fourth pathway-

Misspelled word but no suggestion, manually edit the word, then tab to the change button and press spacebar.

 

When spell check is done, you will hear ok, then press  enter.

 

Hot keys for spell check

 

Alt I is going to ignore this occurrence of this word.

Alt C will change to the edited or suggested word.

Alt A will add the word to the personal dictionary.

Alt G will ignore all occurrences of the word.

Alt L change all occurrences of word to suggested word.

 

Beginning anew document

 

Step one - press the alt key.

Step two- arrow down to new menu choice.

Step three- press enter twice.

 

Saving a new document.

 

Step one- press the alt key.

Step two- arrow down to the save menu choice, press enter.

Step three- type in the name for the document.

Step four- press enter.

 

Exiting word processor

 

Step one- press the alt key.

Step two-  Arrow down once

Step three- arrow up once to the exit menu choice.

Step four- press enter.

**alt F4 will exit  any windows applications.

 

Shutting down the computer

 

Step one- press the start button.

Step two- arrow up to Turn off menu choice.

Step three- press enter.

Step four- press tab to Turn Off button.

Step five- press the spacebar.

****If you have a disk in the a drive, make sure to eject it.

 

Selecting text

 

Shift equal's select.

shift-right  arrow will select character's.

Control shift right arrow will select one word and space to the right.

For the next two commands, Make sure you're at the beginning of the line or paragraph.

 Control z- will undo you're last action.

Control shift down arrow will select the paragraph.

Shift-end selects to the end of the line.

Control-a selects all the text in the document.

 

Cutting and pasting

 

Step one- select the amount of text .

Step two- control  x will cut text.

Step three- move the cursor to where you want to place the text.

Step four- paste the text with control v.

 

Positioning text on the line

 

Control l aligns along the left margin.

Control e centers text on the line.

control r aligns text along the right  margin.

Control j is going to a line the text along the left and right margin.

 

Changing attributes

 

Control b turns bold on and off.

Control i turns italic on and off.

Control u turns underline on and off.

Control shift p will bring up the point size box.

Control shift f will bring up the font box.

 

If you've already typed your text, you can change the attributes by:

 

Step one - select the text you want to change.

Step two - use the keystroke to change the attribute.

Step three - unselect text by pressing the left arrow key.

 

Finding text in the document

 

Step one- control f will bring up the find box.

Step two- type in the text you want to find.

Step three- press enter.

If it finds the text, JAWS will read the text in the sentence.

 If JAWS doesn’t read the text, press insert C to read the word in context.  If no more text is found, it's going to say ok.  Press spacebar.

If no text is found in the document, it's going to say ok.  Press spacebar.

You will be back at the find box.  If you want to find more text, repeat the above commands.  If you do not want to find more text, press the escape key.
